The Music Club is an afterschool / out of school activity for children and young people with disabilities and additional needs living in South Oxfordshire. The club provides a short break activity using music and movement to bring fun, play and leisure for disabled children and young people and their families who may be at risk of social isolation and social exclusion.

Why the music club?

With limited access to play and leisure for disabled children and young people in the local area, two parents : Sophia Nicholls and Julie Hinton both parents of disabled children, decided to start an after school activity where disabled children and their family and friends could come together for peer support, music making, music appreciation and just to have fun all within the local area avoiding the need for long travel journeys experienced by so many of these children for school and other services.

Why music?

“Music can be of great value for children who have difficulties in hearing, seeing, moving, thinking or responding. A single instrument can has qualities of sound and tone irresistible enough to reach a child in a direct, uncomplicated manner. Children who experience severe obstacles in forming relationships with other children, adults and their environment can achieve security and joy in making music. Music is a great medium for development and engaging with life in many ways.#

Music contributes to:

  • reasoning ability
  • reading skills
  • feelings and emotional response
  • personal fulfilment
  • language development
  • the promotion of communication
  • motor control and physical well-being
  • positive attitudes to school
  • socializing and pleasurable experiences in a group

THE MUSIC CLUB exists to facilitate these benefits for disabled children and young people.
